New Spring/Summer Classes at the Community Guild Studio

Knit and Crochet Design Challenge

05/31/2009 to 09/01/2009 (Jencks Event)

Led by its mission to encourage and promote traditional folk arts and artists and inpsired by the traditional folk music of the band, Pendragon, the Community Guild Studios is pleased to announce a knit and crochet design contest.

The theme of this contest is Pendragon's performance of the American Masterpiece Ryan's Mammoth Collection 1050 Reels and Jigs...and How to Play Them at Slater Mill on Sunday, May 31st from 5-7PM.

Conceived in response to a National Endowment for the Arts national initiative, Pendragon's work centers on the performance of tunes from the collection published by Elias Howe in 1883, in order to raise audience awareness of this national treasure of old time New England and American dance tunes and dance traditions.  Though William Bradbury Ryan was Boston band leader, Elias Howe born in 1820 in Massachusetts, spent some of his time making his living in Providence, Rhode Island before establishing himself in Worcester...another Blackstone valley entrepreneur, but with a traditional twist!  Pendragon will play tunes from the Ryan's Collection, perform songs from the era of the clog and strathspey, and feature the stunning steps of their celebrated dancer and percussionist Kevin Doyle.
