Valentine Crazy Quilt Workshop

Instructor: Pat St.Germain

January 28th & February 4th

This 20x 20 inch original design Valentine Heart quilt will introduce students to the art of traditional crazy quilting popularized during the Victorian era.  We’ll unlock the mystery of the patchwork piecing method and learn some of the most common hand embroidery finishing stitches found in crazy quilts, or use your sewing machine decorative stitches instead.  Embellishments add a special touch, so this is a good time to rummage through your inherited treasure chest for special additions!

Class meets: 9:30 AM-12:30 PM

Fee: $40

Supplies:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         You can make your crazy quilted heart with a Victorian, traditional, primitive or contemporary theme…just by choosing your favorite fabrics!

  • Sewing machine and manual
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Neutral and/or matching threads; you may prefer monofilament too for sewing on your trims (you may glue trims too…see below).
  • Basic quilt cutting tools (a smaller size cutting mat should be fine)

Fabrics and Trims:

  • 16 inch square muslin (for foundation piecing)
  • 16 ½ inch square background fabric (behind the heart)
  • 20 ½ inch square thin batting
  • 20 ½ inch square fabric for back of quilt
  • ¼ yd. fabric for border
  • At least 5-6 assorted fat quarters and/or strips of fabric, or scraps for crazy quilting; include 2 solids or near solids.  Pieces or strips shouldn’t be smaller than 2.5 – 3 inches in size.
  • 1/3 yd. flexible trim or lace to surround heart (make sure your trim can curve easily)
  • Assorted embroidery flosses to match or contrast with fabrics
  • Pkg. of embroidery needles
  • Needle threader (sold in packages or 2-3)
  • “Liquid Stitch” (brand name) - clear drying, permanent fabric adhesive for applying trims, or you may stitch them on by machine or by hand.

Optional elements:

  • 2 yds. straight lace or trim to “outline” background block
  • ¼ yd. fabric for binding (if you choose to bind your quilt),  or,  2/3 yd. deep lace or trim to hang from the bottom (as seen on the class sample)
  • Assorted laces, trims, buttons, embellishments, etc.

Buttons on the class sample are “Favorite Findings” brand sold in themed packages (at Joann’s or Michael’s).  Also look in the scrapbooking and jewelry sections of the store for unusual additions.  Of course, don’t overlook your own stash of trinkets and treasures!
