With an initial grant from Housing and Urban Development, Slater Mill has begun its planning phase to restore the two turbines underneath the mill so that we may save these artifacts that enabled manufacturers to harness the river. In addition, this initiative will allow us to use hydropower to generate electricity. The restoration will create green energy for our power needs as well as service a water-powered blacksmith shop. Opportunities for significant science education programs and science-based interpretation for visitors abound. Topics include physics, hydropower, ecology, energy transfer, sustainability and many others. Additional arts and vocational education opportunities will exist with the completion of the blacksmith shop.
